Shelters, both above-ground and underground, have always played an important role in the protection of the civilian population. Proper S1-class shelters can be used in peacetime to store food, tools and other necessities, but in times of danger they are indispensable for survival. Why should you build BSF bomb shelters?
Public shelters are often overcrowded or just scarce in some regions. A private shelter that is built to accommodate the right number of people in a time of need is a great solution for this issue. Not only does a private shelter offer a secure place for the residents of the building, but it also takes off some pressure from the public shelter facilities, providing value to the society as a whole. If every household had their own private shelter, public shelters and bunkers would be much safer as well.

Specifications of our shelters
BSF Bomb Shelter Finland bomb shelters have been developed on the principle that they can be installed as quickly and safely as possible. The shelters are built using lightweight and efficient 302 mm concrete core thermal blocks, which means that the completed shelter is immediately insulated and ready for use even if a crisis should occur before the interior finishes are completed. The shelters have been developed based on the Finnish Regulation 408/2011 on Civil Defence Shelters.
Can be built both above ground and underground.
Thanks to the strong 302 mm thick insulated reinforced concrete walls, cast in one go as monolithic concrete without joints, and the 457 mm thick reinforced concrete ceiling, BSF shelters are safe even as above-ground structures.
Reinforced concrete walls, floor and roof meet the Finnish S1 requirement.
The walls and roof of an S1-class shelter must be made of reinforced concrete with a thickness of at least 300 mm and a floor of at least 200 mm, where the concrete is at least class C30/37 or higher and is properly vibro-compacted. The walls of BSF shelters exceed all minimum requirements to ensure maximum safety. The ceiling is cast on a Ruukki metal profile, which protects against possible concrete pieces and dust falling from the ceiling in the event of an impact.
Heavily reinforced walls for maximum strength.
BSF shelters have a double-layer 16 mm reinforcement mesh in the walls and ceiling. There are U-reinforcements in all corners. This ensures maximum strength for the shelter and a complete sense of security for the shelter user.
Can be built as a stand-alone shelter or connected to a building.
Our shelter can also be built under a new building or in the yard of an existing building. The civil defense shelter should be located no further than 500 meters from the building for which it is being built.
Shelters are available in different sizes.
BSF shelters are available in two basic sizes – L and XL, to provide shelter options for buildings with both larger and smaller space requirements. The actual shelter area for a public shelter must be at least 20 square meters, which is what both our L and XL shelters meet.
Pressure-resistant walls, doors and hatches, and ventilation.
The doors used in our shelters are designed and tested to withstand multiple long-term pressure loads and have a pressure resistance of 200 kPa (2 bar). Our ventilation system pressure valves have a pressure resistance of up to 300 kPa (3 bar).
These features ensure that it is a proper shelter that offers maximum protection to those taking shelter. Shelters that do not meet the minimum wall, ceiling and floor thicknesses, the correct concrete grade, or are not sufficiently reinforced cannot be called shelters – they are hiding places.
Requirements for S1 and S2 class shelters based on Finnish Regulation 408/2011:
- The actual area of a civil defence shelter must be at least two percent of the total area of the building. In the case of shops, industrial, production and assembly buildings and warehouses, the actual area of the shelter must be at least one percent of the floor area.
- A public safety shelter can be located up to 500 meters away from the building for which it is being built.
- A reinforced concrete shelter of class S1 must withstand a load of 100 kPa (1 bar) and a reinforced concrete shelter of class S2 must withstand a load of 200 kPa (2 bar).
- The external walls and roof of a class S1 reinforced concrete shelter must be made of reinforced concrete with a thickness of at least 300 millimeters. The walls and roof of a class S2 shelter must be at least 400 mm and the floor must be at least 200 mm thick.
- Shelter doors, hatches and valves must be positioned so that they are as well protected as possible from bomb fragments.
